Development of proton beam control technology for transmutation characteristic test

Takei, Hayanori

Isotope News, (779), p.11 - 15, 2022/02

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has designed a Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) as an experimental facility in the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The TEF-P is a critical assembly driven by a low-power proton beam, a maximum of 10 W, which is extracted from a high-power beam source, such as 250 kW of 400 MeV proton beam of the J-PARC Linac. To extract such a low-power proton beam from the high-power proton beam, we developed a laser charge exchange (LCE) device and employed its technique, which is one of the non-contact beam extraction techniques. For the proof of performance of the LCE device to the TEF-P, a low-power proton beam was extracted using a negative-hydrogen Linac having an energy of 3 MeV, and a bright laser. This paper summarizes the experimental results.

Proton beam with the power of 0.57 mW was successfully extracted with a laser stripping efficiency of $$2.3times10^{-5}$$. These experimental values are in good agreement with the estimated ones.

Proceedings of 8th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2019) (Internet), p.595 - 599, 2020/06

Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) has a plan to build the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P), in which a 400-MeV proton beam will be delivered from negative hydrogen (H$$^{-}$$) accelerated by the linac. Since the TEF-P requires a stable proton beam with a power of less than 10 W, a steady and meticulous beam extraction method is required to extract a small amount of the proton beam from the high power beam using 250 kW. To fulfill this requirement, we have developed beam extraction based on the Laser Charge Exchange (LCE) method. For the demonstration present beam extraction technique, an experiment was conducted using H$$^{-}$$ beam accelerated by the 3-MeV linac at RFQ test-stand in J-PARC. As a result of the experiment with continuous wave (CW) of the Laser, a charge-exchanged long-pulsed H$$^{+}$$ beam with a power of about 0.70 W equivalent was successfully obtained under the TEF-P beam condition.

Proceedings of 5th International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 2016) (Internet), p.736 - 739, 2017/03

The Accelerator-driven System (ADS) is one of the candidates for transmuting long-lived nuclides, such as minor actinide (MA), produced by nuclear reactors. For efficient transmutation of the MA, a precise pre-diction of neutronics of ADS is required. In order to obtain the neutronics data for the ADS, the Japan Pro-ton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) has a plan to build the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P), in which a 400-MeV negative proton (H$$^{-}$$) beam will be delivered from the J-PARC linac. Since the TEF-P requires a stable proton beam with a power of less than 10W, a stable and meticulous beam extraction method is required to extract a small amount of the proton beam from the high power beam using 250kW. To fulfil this requirement, the Laser Charge Exchange (LCE) method has been developed. The LCE strips the electron of the H$$^{-}$$ beam and neutral protons will separate at the bending magnet in the proton beam transport. To demonstrate the charge exchange of the H$$^{-}$$, a preliminary LCE experiment was conducted using a linac with energy of 3MeV in J-PARC. As a result of the experiment, a charge-exchanged H$$^{+}$$ beam with a power of about 5W equivalent was obtained under the J-PARC linac beam condition, and this value almost satisfied the power requirement of the proton beam for the TEF-P.

Proceedings of 13th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.987 - 991, 2016/11

Accelerator-driven system (ADS) is one of candidates to transmute long-lived nuclides such as minor actinide (MA) produced at nuclear reactor. For efficient transmutation of the MA, precise prediction of neutronics of ADS is indispensable. In order to obtain the neutronics data for the ADS, J-PARC has a plan to build the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P). Since the TEF-P requires stable power of the beam and will operate with thermal power less than 500 W and the proton beam power of 10 W so that a stable and meticulous beam extraction method is required to extract small amount of the beam from the high power LINAC beam with 250 kW. To fulfill requirement, Laser charge exchange method (LCE) has been developed for delivery of 400-MeV proton beam with 25Hz to the TEF-P. The LCE strips the electron of H$$^{-}$$ beam and H$$^{0}$$ will separate at the bending magnet at the proton beam transport. The LCE device consists of YAG-laser with high power as 1.6 J/shot and 25 Hz and transport control system with high accuracy of the beam position. For the demonstration of the charge exchange of the H$$^{-}$$, the further LCE tests is conducted using H$$^{-}$$ beam with energy of 3-MeV at RFQ test stand in J-PARC. In this paper, present status of LCE tests is presented.

Proceedings of 21st International Conference & Exhibition; Nuclear Fuel Cycle for a Low-Carbon Future (GLOBAL 2015) (USB Flash Drive), p.657 - 663, 2015/09

To continue the utilization of the nuclear fission energy, the management of the high-level radioactive waste is one of the most important issues to be solved. Partitioning and Transmutation technology of HLW is expected to be effective to mitigate the burden of the HLW disposal by reducing the radiological toxicity and heat generation. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting the research and development on accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) as a dedicated system for the transmutation of long-lived radioactive nuclides. This paper overviews the recent progress and future R&D plan of the study on the ADS and related fuel cycle technology in JAEA.

Proceedings of Joint IGORR 2014 & IAEA Technical Meeting (Internet), 10 Pages, 2014/00

Partitioning and Transmutation technology is expected to be effective to mitigate the burden of the HLW disposal. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting the research and development (R&D) on accelerator-driven system (ADS) as a dedicated transmutation system of long-lived radioactive nuclides. For ADS to play important roles in the nuclear fuel cycle, several critical issues have to be resolved. To foster the R&D for most of above mentioned technical issues, JAEA plans to build the Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) which consists of two buildings: the Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) and the ADS Target Test Facility (TEF-T). TEF-P is a zero-power critical facility which is operated with a low power proton beam to research the reactor physics and the controllability of ADS. Using this TEF-P facility, many experimental studies are planned.

Proceedings of International Conference on Physics of Fuel Cycles and Advanced Nuclear Systems; Global Developments (PHYSOR 2004) (CD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2004/04

The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) is developing an Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for transmutation of nuclear waste such as minor actinide (MA) and long-lived fission product (LLFP). To study and evaluate the feasibility of ADS by physical and engineering viewpoints, the Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) is proposed under a framework of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) project. The TEF consists of two facilities named as Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P) and ADS Target Test Facility (TEF-T). The TEF-P consists of a zero-power critical assembly which is operated with a low power proton beam to research the reactor physics and the controllability of ADS. The TEF-T is a facility for material irradiation and partial mockup of beam window which can accept a maximum 600MeV-200kW proton beam into the Pb-Bi eutectic target. The purposes, experimental items and the specifications of the facilities are described.

Shielding design of the 200kW Pb-Bi spallation target for the transmutation experimental facility

Sasa, Toshinobu; Oigawa, Hiroyuki; Tayama, Ryuichi*; Hayashi, Katsumi*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.30 - 33, 2004/03

The construction of Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) is planned under the framework of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) project. A liquid lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) spallation target with beam power of 600MeV-200kW will be installed into the TEF. Analyses were performed to determine the effective thickness of biological shield for Pb-Bi target by using both MCNPX and ATRAS code system. Thickness of around 6m should be required to decrease the radiation level. The streaming analyses through the proton injection beam duct and the primary cooling circuit piping were also performed. The result of the beam duct streaming shows good agreement between the results of MCNPX and DUCT-III. The additional shield must be installed to suppress the activation of accelerator components. In the case of streaming through the primary cooling circuit piping, it is proved that the radiation level at the exit of the shield is allowable. The radiation level can be much more reduced by optimizing the bending position and length of the piping.

Transactions of the American Nuclear Society, 85, p.299 - 300, 2001/11

Study of liquid lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) technology is performed at JAERI. Pb-Bi cooled ADS has favorite neutronic performances rather than that of sodium-cooled ADS. In order to develop an ADS, JAERI has proposed a transmutation experimental facility which consists of a 600 MeV-200 kW Pb-Bi spallation target and a fast critical assembly with a spallation target within a framework of the high intensity proton accelerator project. In the viewpoint of engineering application of Pb-Bi, there is a key technology, which should be proven before the construction of TEF. They are materials issues and handling techniques of flowing eutectic Pb-Bi. To control these technical issues, we proceed two experimental studies with the material corrosion test device and the liquid Pb-Bi loop.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) proposes transmutation of minor actinides (MA) by an accelerator-driven system (ADS) using lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as a spallation target and a coolant. To obtain the data required for ADS design, JAEA plans to build a Transmutation Experimental Facility (TEF) within the framework of J-PARC project. TEF consists of two buildings, an ADS target test facility (TEF-T), in which a 400 MeV - 250 kW LBE spallation target will be installed, and a Transmutation Physics Experimental Facility (TEF-P), in which a MA-fuelledfast critical/subcritical assembly driven by low power proton beam will be set up. As a major research items of TEF-T, irradiation test for candidate ADS structural materials, engineering tests for LBE target operation and experiments to specify the effective lifetime of proton beam window will be performed. Secondary neutrons from the LBE target are possible to be used for multi-purpose application. The roadmap to establish the ADS transmutor and latest design activities for TEF construction will be summarized.
